Hello,
I hope that you don't mind me posting this here, please move it if it is in the wrong place.
I'm an MA student at Cardiff University Language & Communication department currently conducting some research for my own academic interest and also to assist the British Deaf Association's advocacy department. I'd really appreciate any help you might be able to give me in finding participants.
I am looking for adults over the age of 18 who are residents in England or Wales and have been the victim of crime since 2003. This can be any sort of crime but must have been reported to the police and, if applicable, gone to court. I would discourage victims of violent crime to come forward as it may be distressing to recount the incident.
The research itself compares Deaf, British Sign Language signers and hearing people's experiences of being victims of crime in order to see whether Deaf people are receiving equal treatment and then to compare those experiences with a Deaf man who went to court in the 1970s, to see what has improved for Deaf people.
So, in order to do this I also need to have a hearing corpus :)
If you do come forward you'd be asked to take part in a 40-60 minute informal discussion about what happened, how the police or courts reacted, how you felt about what happened and what the outcome was. This would be audio recorded either face-to-face or (if over a long distance) by phone. All recordings are kept locked up and will be deleted once the interview has been transcribed and anonymised - nobody will be able to identify you and you can withdraw at any time if you feel uncomfortable.
If you think that you might be willing to take part, I would appreciate hearing from you and please feel free to circulate this to anyone you know. Ideally I need to collect this data before the 14th July.
Best wishes,
