View Full Version : Is this a scam?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum! I wondered if anyone could help with this curious problem that i'm having at the moment. It might not be criminal, but I'm concerned it might be a scam...

My boyfriend and I recently moved in to our flat (4 months ago). The previous tenant was a woman, and she’d been there for 3 years. The mail for her has dried up now, but we have also received the odd bit of post for a guy our landlord has never heard of. We assumed he was a tenant from a long while ago (as our landlord has owned the flat for the last 4 years), and we’ve always returned any post for him to sender as we don’t know who he is.

Anyway, two weeks ago, we received a parcel for him, from a courier, while we were out at work. It had his name and the name of a company on the box, and, after a bit of internet research, I found the website for this company, and an email address for him. If he is up to something dodgy, he’s not exactly hiding himself as I know where he works, his job title, etc. I sent an email to mystery man, asking why the parcel was sent to our address, and what he wanted to do about it. No reply. My boyfriend called the number from the company’s website, but no one picked up. Then, last week, another parcel turned up, again for this mystery man. This time it had a delivery note on it, so I called the suppliers and spoke to a girl who said that mystery man had ordered stuff from her (batteries and lights for a camera), and then called her to complain when he didn’t receive his goods, asking her to send his stuff again, hence we received the second package. The really weird thing is, he has constantly confirmed our address as being his address, and did this as recently as two weeks ago. It is a really specific address, and couldn’t be confused with anywhere else.

Now, I know this is probably quite a boring read so far, but we really are scratching our heads with this one. We can’t work out why he keeps using our address. The parcels aren’t anything dodgy, they are camera goods worth about £500 (so I think I need a medal for being such a good citizen and trying to track him down in the first place), so surely he wouldn’t want them to go to the wrong address. I find it odd that he has ignored our texts and calls, because we're trying to do him a favour. The fact he keeps confirming our address as is, and is trying to avoid all contact with us, is what is making me think this is dodgy and some sort of scam, but I can’t work out how he’d benefit from this. Maybe he is the boyfriend of the previous tenant, but surely he’d know she’s long gone?

If anyone has ever heard of anything similar and can shed any light on this, I’d be really grateful. We’re not sure what to do, if we keep receiving packages. It’s a real nuisance.

Many thanks,

Wendy
